ISO 45001:2027
Transition Guide

The DIS ballot is now officially open. Discover how Temple Quality Management Systems is helping organisations navigate the shift toward mental wellbeing, inclusivity, and climate resilience.

The Evolution of Workplace Safety: March 2026 Update

We have reached a pivotal moment in the evolution of Occupational Health and Safety. As of March 2026, the Draft International Standard (DIS) ballot for ISO 45001 is officially open. This moves the draft from committee development into formal international review—marking the most significant update since the standard’s inception in 2018.

At Temple, we believe that a Management System should do more than just "tick a box." The 2027 revision signals a move away from pure compliance and towards practicable outcomes that protect people in real-world, modern environments.

What is Changing? The Core Themes

The working environment has changed drastically since 2018. The 2027 update is designed to reflect "ways of working" that include hybrid models, digital interfaces, and a much broader understanding of what "health" actually means.

  • Psychosocial Wellbeing: Building on the foundations of ISO 45003, the new standard will place a heavier emphasis on workplace culture, stress management, and mental health as core OHS requirements.
  • Gender-Responsive Safety: Acknowledging that safety is not "one size fits all." This includes recognition of diverse physiological needs and ensuring PPE and safety protocols are inclusive of a diverse workforce.
  • Supply Chain Governance: Expect tighter requirements for outsourced activities, ensuring your OHS standards extend seamlessly to contractors and third-party partners.

Don't Forget: The Climate Amendment

While we look toward 2027, the 2024 Climate Action Amendment is already in effect. Organisations are now required to determine whether climate change is a relevant issue within their OHS management system (Clause 4.1). Temple can help you integrate these assessments into your current system immediately.
